Ricky Stuart has been named the Dally M Coach of the Year following an impressive season leading the Canberra Raiders. Despite predictions that the team would struggle, Stuart guided the Raiders to a minor premiership, their first since 1990, although their finals campaign ended in disappointment.
Stuart’s achievement comes after the Raiders defied expectations, with many experts forecasting a challenging season. The team’s performance under Stuart’s leadership was a testament to his coaching prowess, even as they exited the finals earlier than hoped.
Speaking on his accolade, Stuart was quick to share the spotlight. “It’s an award that is owned by so many people. Everybody is on the journey with a coach and it’s hard to do it without them,” he said. “I always say, you can’t be a good coach without good players and I’ve got the best team in the competition.”
Acknowledging the Team’s Role
Stuart emphasized the collective effort behind the award, attributing the success to his players, family, and the club. “I don’t see this as an award for me. It’s an award for my team, family, and my whole club. They give me the opportunity of being here,” he added.
Despite the early finals exit, Stuart remains optimistic about the Raiders’ future. “Personally I believe we should still be in the competition but I’m biased. I’m disappointed we’re not but it’ll give us fight and that’s what we have to do,” he remarked.
Reflecting on Changes in the NRL
During the award ceremony, Stuart was asked about the changes in the NRL since he began coaching in 2002. With a touch of humor, he responded to host Braith Anasta, “Pretty boys like you commentating,” and added, “Pretty boys like Ethan Strange I’m coaching. I love you as a bloke, those boys on that table, and every other player I’ve coached.”
Stuart’s comments highlight his deep connection with his players and the emotional investment he has in their success. “Over the last couple of weeks it’s been very hard because you’re not involved and I have a team good enough so it’s been dreadfully hard but I coach for one reason and it’s the blokes I coach. That’s what I coach for.”
Stuart’s Coaching Legacy
This marks the second time Stuart has received the Dally M Coach of the Year award, having previously won in 2016. His illustrious career also includes winning the Dally M Medal as a player in 1993, underscoring his longstanding impact on the sport.
The recognition of Stuart’s coaching excellence is a significant achievement in a season filled with challenges and triumphs. His ability to rally a team against the odds and lead them to success is a testament to his skills and dedication.
Looking Ahead
As the Raiders look to the future, Stuart’s leadership will undoubtedly continue to be a guiding force. The team’s unexpected rise this season sets a promising foundation for the coming years, with Stuart at the helm.
Meanwhile, the NRL landscape continues to evolve, with coaches like Stuart adapting to new challenges and opportunities. The journey of the Canberra Raiders under his guidance remains a compelling narrative in the league.
