Uber’s prepaid passes enable users to purchase blocks of five, 10, 15, or 20 rides for their daily routes, with discounts increasing alongside the number of rides bought. A demonstration shared with PCMag highlights savings ranging from 5% on five rides to as much as 20% on 20 rides. This initiative is part of Uber’s broader strategy to make commuting more affordable and predictable for its users.

How the Prepaid Passes Work

Once the feature is available on the Uber app, users can set their preferred route, choose a one-hour window for ride requests, select the number of rides they wish to book, and finalize the payment. These passes are valid for 30 days from the date of purchase and can be shared with family members, adding a layer of flexibility to the offering.

One of the standout features of the prepaid passes is their surge protection. This means that users are shielded from paying higher fares during peak hours if their ride falls within the designated one-hour window. Additionally, if the actual fare is lower than the prepaid amount, users will only be charged the lower fare. Uber is currently clarifying how any discounted amounts will be refunded to customers.

Expanding Availability and Teen-Friendly Options

At launch, Uber’s prepaid passes will be accessible in over 75 cities, including Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, and Seattle, among others. Uber plans to expand this feature to more cities in the near future. In tandem with this launch, Uber is extending its price lock pass to “every major city throughout the US.” This feature allows users to lock in the price of a selected route for 10 rides with a $2.99 subscription, valid for a one-hour window.

In a significant update, both prepaid and price lock passes will be available for teen accounts. This development means that students can prepay for rides to school, sports events, or other activities, while parents can make these purchases on behalf of their teens, enhancing convenience and cost management for families.

Uber Eats and Affordable Meal Options

Beyond commuting, Uber is also addressing meal affordability through Uber Eats. A study cited by Uber reveals that New Yorkers spend an average of $418 on lunches per month. To help reduce this expense, Uber Eats has introduced “Meal Deals,” a new section showcasing lunch options under $15.

According to Uber, “Participating restaurants batch-prepare popular lunch and dinner dishes, helping to keep meals affordable. Since delivery is batched, the order may take a few minutes longer than usual to arrive.” Initially, Meal Deals will be available in New York City, Austin, and Miami, with Philadelphia slated to join soon.
