Eleven people have been hospitalized following a collision between a bus and a car on Sydney’s busy M2 Motorway at Macquarie Park. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 PM on Sunday, involved a bus crashing into the back of an SUV, resulting in what emergency responders described as a “complex incident”.
Four individuals, including the bus driver, are in a stable but serious condition, while seven others sustained minor injuries. The crash prompted a significant emergency response, with NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, and Fire and Rescue NSW all attending the scene.
Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts
The crash scene on Khartoum Road saw the M2 Motorway temporarily closed to facilitate rescue operations. Visuals from the site depicted a coordinated effort by multiple emergency personnel to evacuate passengers and provide medical assistance to the injured.
Inspector Josh Turner from Fire and Rescue NSW detailed the challenges faced by the rescue teams. “We encountered a mass patient situation,” he explained, noting that the bus driver and another individual were in a “serious trap situation”. The rescue operation required intricate maneuvers, including a seat removal to safely extricate the bus driver from the cabin.
Medical Assessment and Hospitalization
NSW Ambulance deployed 18 resources to the scene, assessing a total of 38 people. Inspector Christian Holmes from NSW Ambulance confirmed that four patients were transported to hospitals in a stable but serious condition, while seven others with minor injuries were also hospitalized.
“We had four patients in a stable but serious condition transported to hospital,” Inspector Holmes stated. “And seven patients in a stable condition with minor injuries transported to hospital.”
The injured were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital and Westmead Hospital, with injuries ranging from fractures and bruises to lacerations. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening. Meanwhile, 27 bus passengers were able to walk away unharmed.
