Gears are in motion to enhance profitability, collaboration, and waste reduction across the Rockhampton Region’s manufacturing sector. This initiative was highlighted at the recent Manufacturers Meet-Up, organized by Rockhampton Regional Council’s economic development agency, Advance Rockhampton, in partnership with the Rockhampton Manufacturing Hub.

The Manufacturers Meet-Up sought to address the evolving needs of the local manufacturing industry, offering insights into the sector’s landscape in Queensland and exploring the role of the Queensland Manufacturing Hubs. The event also discussed government engagement, grant funding opportunities, and provided practical advice for small and medium-sized manufacturers aiming to reduce waste.

Manufacturing: A Pillar of Rockhampton’s Economy

Manufacturing continues to be a vital industry for the Rockhampton Region, employing over 2,245 individuals across 184 businesses. These range from food manufacturing to textile and wood production, machinery, and transport equipment. The local manufacturing sector contributes more than $1.12 billion annually to the economy, representing over 10% of Queensland’s total manufacturing output.

According to Economy ID, NIEIR, and ABS, Rockhampton manufacturers output more than $1.12 billion into the economy each year.

Advance Rockhampton, through its strategic initiatives, is actively seeking new supply chain opportunities in sectors such as Defence, residential construction, and major projects. The region’s comparative affordability, availability of industrial-zoned land, robust transport infrastructure, and existing supply chains position local manufacturers favorably to expand their capacity and meet increasing demand.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Opportunities

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams emphasized the significance of manufacturing as a cornerstone of the local economy. He noted that the industry relies on talented staff, innovative ideas, and quality products distributed globally. The Mayor highlighted Advance Rockhampton’s focus on new opportunities in Defence, food and beverage production, residential construction, and logistics.

“Manufacturing is a cornerstone of our economy, relying on talented staff, innovative ideas, and quality products which are sent right around the world,” said Mayor Tony Williams.

The Manufacturers Meet-Up serves as a platform for Advance Rockhampton and the Rockhampton Manufacturing Hub to understand how best to support local manufacturers. The aim is to provide skills pathways and supply chain connections to help these businesses achieve their growth objectives.

Looking Ahead: Challenges and Prospects
