As an IT security administrator at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Mechele Elliott plays a crucial role in safeguarding the information systems that support astronaut health and mission readiness. Her journey into the world of human spaceflight was both rewarding and unexpected, sparked by the encouragement of a family friend.
The pivotal moment came during a challenging period in Elliott’s life. “While I was caring for my son during his cancer treatment—living in the hospital with him and supporting his recovery at home—a family friend who worked at NASA took notice,” Elliott recounted. “She quietly observed my strength, organization, and unwavering dedication to my son. One day she called and said, ‘Get your resume together.'” This encouragement set Elliott on a path she had never anticipated.
A Leap of Faith into NASA
Despite her initial doubts about her qualifications for a position at NASA, Elliott’s friend’s belief in her abilities gave her the courage to apply. “Her belief in me gave me the courage to take that first step—and it changed the course of my life,” Elliott said. With her friend’s endorsement, she landed the position, albeit with some initial nervousness due to her limited experience and knowledge of NASA’s operations.
However, with time and training, Elliott grew more confident in her role. “Reflecting on the numerous personal challenges I have encountered has reinforced my confidence in my ability to overcome obstacles while maintaining a positive outlook throughout my journey,” she stated. “I am proud to have successfully adapted and become a productive member of my team.”
Protecting NASA’s Critical Systems
In her current role, Elliott is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining security policies, procedures, and systems within the Human Health and Performance Directorate. Her work ensures compliance with federal and NASA-specific security standards, managing access control protocols, and responding to security incidents.
One of her most challenging tasks involved the assessment and revitalization of four outdated security plans. “We successfully aligned the security plans with established standards and garnered commendations from NASA leadership,” she explained. This achievement highlights Elliott’s ability to collaborate with a diverse team and navigate complex security challenges.
Balancing Work and Personal Life
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Elliott finds balance through various hobbies. She began painting at a young age and continues to find tranquility in her art. Despite the intense Houston summer heat, she is an avid gardener, finding fulfillment in the beauty of her flowers and sharing homegrown fruits and vegetables with friends and family. Additionally, she has earned a reputation as an excellent baker, delighting coworkers with her cheesecakes during workplace celebrations.

Having served at NASA for over 25 years, Elliott is profoundly grateful for the opportunities she has been given. Looking ahead, she offers important advice to aspiring team members at the agency. “Remain authentic to yourselves, pursue your aspirations with determination, and uphold a commitment to excellence in all your endeavors,” she advises.
