nikon-launches-zr-cinema-camera-in-collaboration-with-red

Nikon has unveiled the ZR, a groundbreaking full-frame 6K camera, marking the debut of its new Z CINEMA series. This release is the first significant product to emerge from Nikon’s strategic acquisition of RED Digital Cinema, Inc., a move that has intrigued industry insiders who have dubbed the camera the ‘baby RED’. The ZR is specifically designed for professional filmmakers and content creators, seamlessly integrating RED’s advanced technologies into the Nikon Z-mount ecosystem.

At the core of the ZR is the innovative video format, R3D NE, derived from RED’s proprietary R3D RAW codec. This format supports internal 12-bit RAW recording at resolutions up to 6K at 60 frames per second and 4K at 120 frames per second. The camera boasts RED’s renowned color science and features dual native ISOs of 800 and 6400, alongside an impressive dynamic range exceeding 15 stops.

Advanced Audio and Video Capabilities

One of the ZR’s standout features is its audio capability, which introduces 32-bit float audio recording for both external microphones and the built-in mic—a first for interchangeable lens cameras. The internal microphone system, leveraging Nokia’s OZO Audio technology, offers five selectable pickup patterns tailored for diverse recording scenarios.

Despite its sophisticated video specifications, the ZR maintains a lightweight design, weighing in at just 630 grams with the battery and memory card. Its construction supports efficient heat dissipation without the need for a cooling fan, enabling continuous 6K recording for up to 125 minutes when connected to external power sources.

Innovative Design and Workflow Integration

The ZR features a large, bright 4.0-inch, 3.07-million-dot monitor, minimizing the necessity for an external display. For seamless workflow integration, the camera supports Frame.io Camera to Cloud for direct wireless file transfers. Additionally, it is the first Nikon camera to feature a digital accessory shoe, facilitating power and two-way communication with compatible accessories.

Borrowing autofocus technology from Nikon’s flagship Z9, the ZR employs deep learning to detect and track nine different subject types. It also includes 5-axis in-body image stabilization and still photography capabilities, utilizing the 24.5MP sensor found in the recent Z6III.

Market Position and Future Implications

The ZR camera is currently available for pre-order at a recommended retail price of $3,499 for the body only. More details can be found on the Nikon Australia website.

The announcement comes as Nikon continues to expand its presence in the high-end cinema market, a sector traditionally dominated by brands like ARRI and Sony. By incorporating RED’s cutting-edge technology, Nikon is positioning itself as a formidable competitor in this space.

“The ZR represents a significant step forward in our commitment to innovation and excellence in the cinema camera industry,” said a Nikon spokesperson.

It’s noteworthy that there are now four ‘Z Cinema’ cameras listed on the Nikon website, all utilizing the Z mount. This includes the RED Digital Cinema V-Raptor [X] 8K V V Camera, priced at a substantial $56,184.

As the industry evolves, Nikon’s strategic partnership with RED could signal a shift in the landscape of cinema camera technology, offering filmmakers a new blend of performance and versatility. The move represents Nikon’s bold vision for the future of filmmaking, potentially influencing the direction of camera development for years to come.
