Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo is looking ahead to the “new competition” as the NRL finals kick off next weekend, eager to move past Saturday night’s 24-6 defeat to the Sharks. The match was a challenging one for the Bulldogs, compounded by injuries to two crucial players. Bronson Xerri is set to miss at least a week following an early category 1 head knock, while winger Marcelo Montoya exited the game with a potentially severe ankle injury.

The loss of these players could impact the Bulldogs’ lineup as they prepare for their upcoming qualifying final against the Storm next Friday night. According to Ciraldo, “It’s not looking great for Marcelo. It’s a bit early to say [that his season is done] but he’s in a fair bit of pain.”

Depth and Strategy Amidst Setbacks

Despite the injuries, Ciraldo remains optimistic about his team’s depth. “We’re lucky to have a bit of depth there. A guy like Enari Tuala was our best player and he’s made the most of his opportunity, and it looks like somebody else will get one too,” Ciraldo noted. The coach hinted at potential lineup changes, with Jethro Rinakama likely to replace Montoya and Matt Burton possibly shifting into the centers for Xerri, paving the way for Toby Sexton’s return to the halves.

Ciraldo admitted the game was challenging for his players to mentally prepare for, given that their position in the finals was already secured. “I’m glad that’s over and we can get on to the next phase of the competition,” he stated. “Obviously we were nowhere near our best and that’s what happens when your mindset is slightly off.”

Looking Forward to the Finals

Despite the setback, Ciraldo is confident about the Bulldogs’ prospects in the finals. “It’s a totally different game once you get to finals. There’s a lot more ball in play, there’s a lot less stoppages. I think our game will be much more suited to it than the game has been the last two weeks,” he explained.

The Bulldogs have been one of the most consistent teams throughout the season, finishing third overall. “We have been the third most consistent team all year, and we deserve to finish where we are. It hasn’t been perfect the last little period, been up and down, but we deserve to finish third and give ourselves the best chance over the next four weeks,” Ciraldo said, reflecting on the season’s ups and downs.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

The Bulldogs’ resilience will be tested as they navigate the finals without some of their key players. However, the team’s depth and adaptability could prove advantageous. According to Fox League’s Braith Anasta, Ciraldo remained “stoic” during the post-match press conference, indicating a focused and determined mindset heading into the finals.

As the Bulldogs prepare for their clash with the Storm, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Ciraldo’s strategies unfold. The finals present a fresh opportunity for the Bulldogs to showcase their prowess, and despite the recent loss, there is a palpable sense of anticipation and readiness within the team.

With the finals just around the corner, the Bulldogs are poised to make their mark, turning the page on a challenging match and setting their sights on the ultimate prize.
