Anthony Albanese has joined a coalition of world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in discussions aimed at ending Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. The talks, dubbed the ‘Coalition of the Willing,’ focused on potential plans for deploying an international peacekeeping force if a ceasefire is successfully negotiated.

The discussions took place shortly after Albanese’s recent phone call with former U.S. President Donald Trump, which occurred overnight on Thursday. This conversation sets the stage for a possible face-to-face meeting in Washington D.C. later this month.

Global Commitment to Ukraine

Alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, leaders from New Zealand, Canada, and other nations reaffirmed their commitment to support Ukraine in its struggle against Moscow’s invasion. The coalition emphasized their determination to stand with Ukraine “for as long as it takes” to achieve peace.

“Australia stands with Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion,” stated Albanese’s office. The statement underscored Australia’s dedication to working with international partners to secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy described the discussions as a “serious concrete step” towards peace. Macron clarified that any international troops deployed would not be stationed on the frontlines but would aim to prevent further aggression.

Australia’s Role and Potential Military Involvement

Albanese has left the door open for Australian troops to join European forces in Ukraine. In March, he stated that Australia “stands ready to assist” and would consider any requests to contribute forces. This position reflects Australia’s broader commitment to international peacekeeping efforts.

The prime minister is scheduled to visit Keir Starmer in London following his trip to the United States. This visit is expected to further solidify Australia’s role in the international coalition supporting Ukraine.

Constructive Dialogue with Trump

Albanese characterized his phone call with Trump as “warm and constructive,” covering topics such as trade, shared security interests, and economic ties. The conversation highlighted critical minerals, a significant bargaining chip for Australia in negotiations with the U.S. amid Trump’s aggressive tariff policies.

This call marks the fourth interaction between the two leaders and precedes Albanese’s upcoming trip to New York for the UN General Assembly meeting. The Australian government is eager to arrange a direct meeting between Albanese and Trump, potentially at the White House, following the recent visit by Defence Minister Richard Marles to Washington.

Economic and Security Cooperation

A spokesperson for Albanese noted that the leaders discussed “economic cooperation between Australia and the United States,” focusing on opportunities for collaboration in trade and critical minerals. The conversation also touched on the strength of the bilateral relationship and the importance of shared security interests.

Albanese shared on social media that they discussed “our trade and economic relationship as well as areas for growth including critical minerals. We also discussed shared US-Australia security interests.”

Implications for Defence and Future Relations

Shared security interests likely included discussions on the Aukus nuclear submarines agreement. A Pentagon review of this deal with Australia and the UK is expected to conclude around November, coinciding with White House pressure on Australia to increase its defence spending to 3% of GDP.

Albanese recently indicated that the government would meet these demands, emphasizing the importance of the US-Australian alliance. “We’ll continue to provide whatever investment is required to make sure that we lift our capability and we lift our relationships as well,” he stated in an interview with Nine.

The United States is actively seeking to diversify its critical mineral supply chain, reducing reliance on imports from China. This strategic move aligns with Australia’s interests and could strengthen bilateral economic ties.

The ongoing dialogue between Albanese and Trump, along with Australia’s involvement in the Coalition of the Willing, underscores the nation’s commitment to global peace and security efforts. As the situation in Ukraine evolves, these international collaborations will play a crucial role in shaping the geopolitical landscape.
