The sun sets swiftly over New South Wales’ Big Sky Country, casting a golden glow across the expansive landscape. As the horizon transforms into a canvas of pastel hues, synchronized pelicans gracefully descend onto Lake Keepit. This picturesque setting is home to Wilderluxe Lake Keepit, the latest glamping retreat by Reflections Holiday Parks, offering a unique blend of luxury and nature.

Nestled between Tamworth and Gunnedah, the retreat features eight opulent Star Tents, aptly named Gunagala, which means “sky” in the local Kamilaroi language. These tents, perched above the lake, provide a serene escape under the vast, star-studded sky that defines the region. With its low levels of light pollution, Big Sky Country offers an unparalleled stargazing experience.

A Luxurious Retreat Amidst Nature

Wilderluxe Lake Keepit combines the charm of glamping with the comforts of a boutique hotel. Each Star Tent is equipped with plush interiors, solid insulated walls, king-sized beds, and kitchenettes. The ensuite bathrooms are fully enclosed, and a skylight above the bed allows guests to gaze at the stars from the comfort of their accommodations. Hunter Lab amenities and artworks by local Kamilaroi artist Letitia Barty enhance the experience.

Guests can unwind in outdoor baths, enjoy tea, read, or play board games at the communal Gilay Lounge. The natural surroundings are home to kangaroos and wallabies, frequently spotted at dusk, adding to the retreat’s allure.

Big Sky Dreaming: A Cultural and Astronomical Experience

The highlight of a stay at Wilderluxe is the Big Sky Dreaming evening, an event that blends Indigenous and Western astronomy. Narrated by local Kamilaroi man, Uncle Len Waters, the experience offers insights into the land’s ancient stories, followed by stargazing around a campfire. Despite the full moon’s brightness, guests can observe its surface in detail through telescopes, while toasting marshmallows and engaging with the retreat’s general managers, Katie and Dan Toney.

“The stars aren’t as clear as usual due to the full moon; however, we can see the moon’s surface in detail through telescopes,” said a guest, highlighting the unique celestial experience.

Culinary Delights at Carroll Gap Farmhouse

Beyond stargazing, guests can explore culinary experiences at Carroll Gap Farmhouse, where they can either hone their cooking skills or enjoy a meal prepared on an 80-year-old Aga stove by owner Jan Dircks. The former home economics teacher shares the history of the farmhouse while preparing a three-course dinner featuring local produce. Guests are welcomed into her kitchen, where they can savor dishes like Jack’s Creek steaks and mushroom tart with fig and goat’s cheese salad.

Back at the tent, guests can relax with vinyl records, all astronomy-themed, and enjoy the tranquil night sky. “We rate our stay a million stars,” remarked one guest, reflecting on the unique blend of luxury and nature.

Planning Your Visit

Wilderluxe Lake Keepit offers a minimum two-night stay, including a continental breakfast pack, daily service, and hosted drinks as part of the Big Sky Dreaming experience. Guests can bring their own supplies or purchase barbecue packs to enhance their stay. The retreat is accessible via a 5½-hour drive from Sydney or a direct flight to Tamworth Regional Airport, followed by a 40-minute drive.

For those seeking a blend of luxury and nature, Wilderluxe Lake Keepit provides an unforgettable glamping experience in one of New South Wales’ most breathtaking regions.
