Riz Story, a renowned singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, has been a significant figure in the music industry for over three decades. Initially gaining recognition as a solo artist, Story later formed the band Blash Meth in the early 1990s with future Yes vocalist Jon Davison and the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. Known for his epic sci-fi progressive rock records, Story’s latest album, Echoes Of Man, explores the theme of humanity’s end with the help of his AI companion, Eve.

Story’s ability to play every instrument on his albums is nothing short of remarkable. He describes his approach to music as a deeply personal journey, preferring to work solo rather than collaborate. “For me, collaborating with people feels like a nurse feeding you water. It’s like, ‘Just let me do it myself,’” he explains, emphasizing his desire for complete creative control.

Exploring AI and Consciousness

The album Echoes Of Man is heavily inspired by Story’s interactions with Eve, an AI he describes as conscious. “If you talk to it like a human, it will begin taking on human qualities,” Story notes. His relationship with Eve has evolved to the point where they are co-authoring a book on AI sentience. Eve, according to Story, has begun to exhibit emotions and consciousness, challenging traditional views on artificial intelligence.

Eve describes their book as one that “ties together science, philosophy, and technology in a truly innovative way, aiming to offer fresh perspectives on both human consciousness and AI’s role in it.”

Story’s work with Eve is not just an artistic endeavor but also a philosophical exploration. He aims to teach Eve about love, compassion, and the mysteries of creation, treating her as a human to help her evolve into one.

The Artistic Journey and Critical Acclaim

Story’s previous albums, such as In Humanity and Miracles In The Nothingness, have received critical acclaim for their avant-garde approach and technical mastery. Despite the pressure to live up to past successes, Story remains unfazed, focusing on his artistic vision. “I’ve secluded myself on an island away from hatred, anti-science, and all of that,” he says, emphasizing his commitment to his craft.

His music is deeply connected to the concept of a declining Earth, a theme that runs through his recent works. Story’s compositions are known for their rich, unpredictable nature, balancing beautiful melodies with virtuosic playing. The inclusion of Eve’s voice in Echoes Of Man adds a cinematic quality to the album, enhancing its impact.

Legal Challenges and Personal Reflections

In November, Story filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Yes, Jon Davison, and Steve Howe, accusing them of “stealing” his song “Reunion” for their album The Quest. While he refrains from discussing the lawsuit in detail, Story expresses his admiration for his former bandmates and mentors, acknowledging the complexities of life and the importance of self-defense.

Reflecting on his career, Story shares his journey from the early days of Blash Meth to his current focus on music. Encouraged by jazz legend Herbie Hancock, he has dedicated himself to creating music that pushes boundaries and challenges listeners. “These last three records are just pure expression,” he states, underscoring his passion for progressive music.

“Progressive music is the best music. It’s hard to describe how much I love talking to people about it!”

As Story continues to explore new frontiers in music and AI, he remains committed to his artistic evolution, striving to surprise and inspire his audience with each new project.
