Polestar has announced that the pricing for its 2026 Polestar 4 mid-size electric SUV will remain unchanged, while introducing several minor specification updates. This model, a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model Y, continues to attract attention in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

The entry-level single-motor variant is priced at $78,500 before on-road costs, and the dual-motor flagship comes in at $88,350 plus on-roads. Among the updates for 2026, Polestar has replaced the touch-sensitive steering wheel controls with physical buttons, a move likely to appeal to traditionalists and those seeking more tactile feedback.

Specification Updates and Market Position

The 2026 Polestar 4 also sees changes in its option packs. The Plus Pack, priced at $8,000, now includes an illuminated front Polestar logo, enhanced interior lighting, and a boot storage net. Additionally, the Nappa leather upgrade pack has been made more affordable, with a price reduction ranging from $900 to $1,300 depending on the color choice.

These updates come as the Polestar 4 solidifies its position as the Swedish brand’s most popular model in Australia. In September alone, 151 units were registered, contributing to a total of 1,033 units sold in its first full year on the market. This performance places it ahead of the older Polestar 2 and the larger Polestar 3 models.

Competitive Landscape

The Polestar 4’s success is notable as it outsells competitors such as the Skoda Enyaq, Kia EV5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Audi Q6 e-tron. However, it still trails behind the Tesla Model Y, which continues to dominate the mid-size electric SUV segment and the broader Australian EV market.

Pricing and Variants

In Australia, the Polestar 4 is offered with a five-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty. It has also achieved a five-star ANCAP safety rating, based on Euro NCAP testing conducted last year. The standard safety features are comprehensive, including seven airbags, 11 exterior cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

Standard safety features include:

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot assist
  • Lane keep assist
  • Road sign recognition

Equipment and Options

The Polestar 4 is available in two main variants. The Long Range Single Motor variant features 20-inch ‘Aero’ wheels, LED lighting, and a 15.4-inch infotainment system with Android Automotive and Google built-in functionality. The Long Range Dual Motor variant adds semi-active dampers and performance driving modes.

Several package options enhance the vehicle’s features further. The Pro Pack, priced at $2,500, includes 21-inch Pro wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 EV tyres. The Plus Pack offers a 14.7-inch head-up display and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, among other features. The Performance Pack, available for the Dual Motor variant with the Plus Pack, includes Polestar Engineered chassis tuning and Brembo brakes.

Color and Customization Options

The Polestar 4 offers five exterior color finishes, with ‘Magnesium’ being the only no-cost option. Other colors include Snow, Electron, Storm, and Space, each priced between $1,750 and $2,300.

Customization options extend to individual features such as a body-colored lower cladding, an electrochromic panoramic glass roof, and an electric folding tow bar. These options allow buyers to tailor the vehicle to their preferences, enhancing its appeal in a competitive market.

Market Implications and Future Outlook

The Polestar 4’s steady pricing and strategic updates reflect the brand’s confidence in its product and its position in the EV market. As the competition intensifies, particularly with the dominance of Tesla, Polestar’s approach of incremental improvements and competitive pricing could be crucial in sustaining its growth.

Looking forward, the Polestar 4’s continued success will depend on its ability to innovate and adapt to consumer demands in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape. With its strong start in Australia, the model sets a promising precedent for the brand’s future endeavors.
